Bill Scott,
Digital Media Practice Leader,
IBM

Bill Scott leads the Digital Media practice for IBM Business Consulting in the UK. Digital Media is an area of strategic investment for IBM, with the objective to create repeatable business solutions to allow IBM’s clients to realise the value of Digital Media.

Before this role, Bill led the development of IBM’s IP3 Solution – a full IP based triple-play infrastructure for operators wishing to offer IP telephony, high speed internet access and TV. This solution provides a key differentiator in enabling new services which combine different elements of the triple-play. Bill led the engagement of his specialist team in the project which delivered this functionality to Lyse Tele, a subsidiary of Lyse Energi, (Stavanger, Norway) – the first project of this kind for IBM worldwide which started in 2002. As a result, IBM has built a significant business in IP triple-play with multiple clients in many countries across EMEA, including two in the UK.

Until April 2003, Bill was the practice leader for interactive TV for IBM Global Services EMEA. Bill was headhunted to create this practice in November 1999 and built a cross industry specialist team that delivers both business consulting and technical integration services to organisations wishing to exploit iTV and triple-play – either as core business or as a channel to market.

This team has been responsible for the successful delivery of iTV solutions for major retailers, banks, financial services companies, motor manufacturers and central and local government as well as iTV operators and broadcasters.

Prior to joining IBM, Bill worked in a wide range of roles for software services, software product and end-user organisations during a 20-year career in IT. This included early work in interactive TV, at a company that writes embedded operating system software for Set-Top Boxes (later acquired by Canal+ Technologies).

Bill’s career started at Merrill Lynch where he qualified as a Licensed Commodity Broker in 1985. He moved into IT after building several business solutions for the retail stock and commodity broking office and then and played a key role in growing Merrill’s PC base from 0-1200, including the first major Token Ring network installation in Europe. This experience allowed Bill to develop a successful Help Desk and Information Centre product (Quetzal) for a small start-up software house – WorkGroup Systems.

After another spell in the City of London, developing Risk Management software for ACT Financial Systems (Now Midas Kapity Intl.), Bill moved to e-business software services specialist Softwright in 1995. At Softwright, Bill developed a number of major accounts including American Express and the BBC to build a strong services business based on innovation, reuse and pragmatic business solutions. Bill was Divisional Director of the e-business Division, responsible for 50 people – about half the company.

Bill has always retained a strong business focus despite some very technical roles.
